ok so we are all about to embark on a new course with our new organisation from next year anyone given any thought to what type of uniform we should have? should it be formal like the one we currently have or more practical for scouting use.we are after all supposed to be an out of doors organisation but the uniform we have is really an indoor or dress uniform.Anyone got some thoughts about our future look? |

The uniform is a "die-hard" issue, you have two schools of thought here. You have the traditionalist who want to stick to the regimental style uniform and you have the "modern" thinkers to change it to a practical uniform i.e. fleece and combats. This is proved by the debate about the beret that continually comes up every year. Again shot down at national council this year as people from CSI anyway like the beret and even the national PL's want it to remain and generally like the uniform. Now for the merger what uniform should we have? Well on a personal note and speaking as a young leader I don't agree with the combats and fleece idea for scouts, is it really going to increase numbers because it is "cool", I don't think so, scouts are proud of there uniform and even though they may hide when one of there school friends walks by and might see them in uniform, they are still proud to be in the uniform for formal occasions and meetings in general. Fleece an combats would not differentiate the scouts from other outdoor societies such as hikers and mountaineers etc... Derek |

I won't add anything new other than to throw in a few words of wisdom on the subject. "There are supporters and opponents of any change in the uniform (hat, shorts, shirt). It would certainly be out of the question for the Scout uniform to follow fashion trends, but it's periodic adaptation to current styles is not only essential but indespensible. The fact that in the military, the air force has a blue uniform, the navy a white one and the infantrymen wear khaki in no way betrays the traditions of what could be the best service in the world. The important point is that the uniform be practical and express the voluntary membership of a world brotherhood. Far from creating a feeling of superiority or undue pride towards those who are not 'in the family' the uniform should induce a certain mode of behaviour, modesty, the desire to serve and the love of one's neighbour" Dr. Laszlo Nagy, Former Secretary-General of WOSM 250 Million Scouts (Dartnell Publishers, 1985) "The Scout kit, through it's uniformity, now constitutes a bond of brotherhood among boys across the world. The correct wearing of the Uniform and smartness of turnout of the individual Scout makes him a credit to our Movement. It shows his pride in himself and in his Troop. One slovenly Scout, on the other hand, inaccurately dressed may let down the whole Movement in the eyes of the public. Show me such a fellow and I can show you one who has not grasped the true Scouting spirit and who takes no pride in his membership of our great Brotherhood" BP. Scouting for Boys. (The Scout Association. 1999) I can't talk for Grassies, but Sea Scouts certainly get a lot of use out of our far more traditional (Dress) uniform. I can't recall anybody starting a debate on our uniform other than as devil's advocate, and meeting with a frosty response from Leaders conferances, Watch Leader (PL) Parliaments and right down to troop level. Although I don't see the merger affecting the Sea Scout uniform that much. We like our uniform. Cian. |

I hope it aint too late to comment on this issue, but I must admit, i quite like the present uniform. The blue shirt looks good and dignified and one would prolly b surprised by the amount of scouts that like the uniform too. Saying that, I would make it out of a lighter material, something that would take the ware and tear more easily so that it would not just be used for formal events. The one thing that i dont like is the pants. Way too formal and oldstyle. I can fully understand why many scouts dislike full uniform. Was on the Hill 2000 recently i got to see the Belgium full unifrom. (At least i think it was Belgium.) But they were waring O'Neills (I think) tracksuit/combats which looked really good. I can see people being immediately put off once i mentioned tracksuit bottoms but you really would have to see these before forming a judgement. Other than that, these pants could also have the legs zipped off just above the knees making them into a really cool pair of shorts. Personnally i dont like the idea of combats and fleece which has been mentioned/decided on recently. Well theres my tuppence. BootraS |

I agree, the current Uniform is not bad - a few modifications and perhaps introduction of casual bottoms is appealing. Its a pity that the current uniform cannot be worn correctly (as seen at Hill 2000) - it's a disgrace that as a uniformed Association travelling abroad the Uniform was worn hanging out, with shorts, with jeans, without Neckerchiefs, etc, etc. It would have been preferable to have worn no uniform than to wear it with such disrespect. |

Hi. I am from an SAI group and we wear the dark navy shirts the same as the leader. We dont have berets but we think it would be cool if we did. We wear our shirts with navy tracksuit bottoms because there more comfertable but I think we should also have the proper trousers for parades and stuff. Hopefully when the two group CSI/SAI join as one we will have berets. |
